Dr. Dennis Mark Onuigbo is an environmental and resource economist whose work sits at the intersection of sustainability, energy systems, agricultural development, and emerging digital environmental technologies. With an international academic trajectory spanning Africa, Asia, and Australia, he has developed a multidisciplinary research profile focused on addressing global challenges in resource management, climate change, and community livelihoods.

Dr. Onuigbo began his academic journey at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Economics. During this period, he demonstrated early leadership and academic promise, serving as President of the Agricultural Policy Makers Association. His interest in development economics and sustainability led him to pursue a Master of Science in Agricultural Economics at Bogor Agricultural University, Indonesia, under the Indonesian Government’s Developing Countries Partnership Scholarship. His master’s research examined oil palm policy, land-use change, and community livelihoods, contributing to policy-relevant discussions on sustainable agriculture and rural development.

Building on this foundation, Dr. Onuigbo was awarded the prestigious Tasmanian Graduate Research Scholarship to undertake doctoral studies at the University of Tasmania, where he completed a PhD in Economics. His doctoral research focused on renewable energy penetration in the Australian power system, analysing consumer preferences, wholesale electricity pricing dynamics, and the broader economic implications of energy transitions. His work explored critical issues such as the merit-order effect and energy market responses to increasing renewable integration, contributing to both academic literature and policy debates in energy economics.

Dr. Onuigbo’s research portfolio reflects a strong commitment to interdisciplinary and applied scholarship. His publications span environmental economics, agricultural systems, aquaculture sustainability, and climate-related impacts on livelihoods. He has contributed to internationally recognised journals, including Aquaculture, where his work on community participation in animal disease surveillance highlights the importance of human dimensions in environmental management. His more recent research demonstrates a growing engagement with digital systems and advanced analytical techniques, including the application of structural equation modelling to study farmer participation in digital agricultural extension systems in Indonesia (2026). He has also contributed to research on fisheries resource management, further expanding his interdisciplinary reach into marine and coastal resource economics.

Across his career, Dr. Onuigbo has collaborated with scholars from diverse international institutions, reflecting a strong commitment to global research engagement. His work addresses practical challenges such as climate change impacts on agriculture, land-use transitions, and sustainable resource governance, particularly in developing economies.

In addition to research, Dr. Onuigbo has extensive teaching experience across multiple higher education systems. He has served as a Lecturer in the Department of Agricultural Economics at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where he taught courses in research methods, agricultural policy, and development economics, and supervised undergraduate research projects. He has also contributed as a Casual Academic at the University of Tasmania, teaching quantitative methods and supporting courses in economics and energy policy. His teaching philosophy emphasises analytical thinking, data-driven decision-making, and the integration of quantitative and digital tools in solving real-world problems.

Dr. Onuigbo is actively engaged in academic service and scholarly communities. He serves as a reviewer for Scopus-indexed journals, including Ecological Economics, and participates in international conferences on sustainability, energy systems, and environmental policy. His presentations across Australia, Asia, and beyond reflect his ongoing contribution to global academic discourse.

Beyond academia, Dr. Onuigbo has demonstrated strong leadership and community engagement. He served as President of the UTAS Society of African Students in Tasmania, where he fostered cultural exchange and academic support networks. His broader interests include mentoring, international collaboration, and community development. He has also been recognised for extracurricular achievements in sports, reflecting a well-rounded and disciplined personal profile.

Looking forward, Dr. Onuigbo’s research agenda is increasingly oriented toward digital environmental systems, including applications of data analytics, econometrics, and emerging technologies in forestry, agriculture, and climate systems. His work aims to bridge the gap between traditional resource economics and modern digital approaches, contributing to innovations in digital forestry, ecosystem monitoring, and sustainable resource management.

Dr. Dennis Mark Onuigbo continues to build an impactful academic career defined by interdisciplinary research, international collaboration, and a commitment to advancing sustainable development through evidence-based policy and innovation.
