Dennis Mark Onuigbo has made substantial contributions to the field of resources and environmental economics, driven by a passion for knowledge and a commitment to global impact. His academic journey began at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Economics. During this time, Dennis displayed his leadership abilities as President of the Agricultural Policy Makers Association, leaving a strong impression on both peers and faculty.
Dennis was later awarded the Indonesian government’s Developing Countries Partnership Scholarship, which allowed him to pursue a Master’s degree at Bogor Agricultural University in Indonesia. His research focused on agricultural policy, with particular emphasis on oil palm policy, land use, and community livelihoods—work that earned recognition at international conferences and established him as an emerging leader in the field. Building on these achievements, Dennis received a prestigious Tasmanian Graduate Research Scholarship to undertake a Ph.D. in Economics with a focus on Resource and Environmental Economics at the University of Tasmania, Australia. His doctoral research provided valuable insights into the relationship between people and renewable energy penetration in the Australian power system, investigating electricity consumers' willingness to pay for renewable and nuclear energy, examining whether higher renewable penetration is resulting in lower wholesale prices following the merit order hypothesis, and analyzing potential cannibalization effects.
Dennis’s research has been widely published in respected journals, solidifying his reputation as an expert in community livelihoods, resources, and environmental economics. Notably, his publication in Elsevier’s Aquaculture on the importance of community involvement in animal disease surveillance has been widely cited, emphasizing sustainability in aquaculture. Dennis has collaborated with academics from diverse backgrounds, exemplifying his commitment to inclusive and impactful research. His dedication to sharing knowledge is also evident in his roles as a lecturer at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where he mentored future agricultural economists, and as a tutor at the Tasmanian School of Business and Economics, where he taught quantitative methods for economics and finance.
Beyond academia, Dennis actively participates in conferences, workshops, and discussions on pressing environmental issues, especially those concerning energy, community livelihoods, and agriculture. His contributions to international student summits and leadership in student associations have fostered cross-cultural understanding and cooperation. As President of the UTAS Society of African Students in Tasmania, he created a supportive network for African students, promoting academic and cultural exchange. Additionally, Dennis’s engagement in athletics earned him accolades as the top goal scorer and player’s player for Tasmanian teams Nelson Football Club (2019) and South East United Football Club (2021).
